MANY DON’T KNOW THEY HAVE HEARING LOSS
The mystery of why so many people who suffer from hearing loss don’t know they have it… and the sense of triumph they feel when they overcome it.
It may sound surprising that most people with hearing loss don’t realize it. But consider that they don’t hear words correctly, so how can they know what they didn’t hear? To them it was correct. Recognizing you have hearing loss may start when someone tells a joke and everyone is laughing but you didn’t because you didn’t hear or understand everything that was said. Or, perhaps you respond incorrectly to what someone says and everyone laughs.
If steps aren’t taken to correct your hearing loss, it gets progressively worse as your hearing and word understanding deteriorates over time. Based on my 34 years of experience helping thousands of people hear better, I will guarantee you if you have a hearing loss your life will be or has been affected in one or all in the following ways:
• Denial and the assertion that you hear just fine and are not missing or misunderstanding speech;
• Blaming others for not speaking loudly enough, mumbling or mistakenly talking to you when they aren’t facing you;
• Frustration and anger from family and friends. It can lead to misunderstanding and repeating until everyone ends up shouting;
• Stress at work, trying to understand what customers want or what is said in meetings. Asking others what’s going on;
• Ultimatums from those close to you. Relationships grow apart if there is lack of good communication. Often it gets down to communicating on a need-to-know basis;
• You would much rather stay home than go out to a noisy restaurant or even a family gathering because you feel like you’ll spend the evening agreeing with everyone, and wondering what was so funny;
• Making decisions becomes harder and harder. You worry about not getting it right;
• The TV is making the neighbors restless.
Everyone who has a hearing loss starts down the same path. I have heard thousands of versions of the same story. They all include a very proud woman or man who is determined not to wear “one of those hearing aids,” you know the kind that “makes you look old.". No matter who does it, or how much begging or pressure put on them they just aren’t going to do it.
But Wait! What you will find intriguing is the ending…
Then, one day, something occurs; like their granddaughter plans to get married or some important event is scheduled that they want to be a part of. They decide it’s time to fix their hearing with a hearing aid. One of “those digital hearing aids” they hear is the best.
Guess what? When they get it, they hear better but they can’t understand what people are saying! Yes, they do much better with hearing aids than without them, but surprisingly, unless they are watching the lips of the speaker they have difficulty making out what is being said. Why?
