It may sound surprising that most people with hearing loss don't realize it. But consider that they don't hear words correctly, so how can they know what they didn't hear? To them it was correct. Recognizing you have hearing loss may start when someone tells a joke and everyone is laughing but you didn't because you didn't hear or understand everything that was said. Or, perhaps you respond incorrectly to what someone says and everyone laughs.
