Less Visible Hearing Aids Are An Option

One major concern with aging adults experiencing hearing loss is the appearance of traditional hearing aids. Traditional hearing aids are generally flesh colored and sit behind the ear, with an attachment that fits completely into the ear canal. These large, often uncomfortable, hearing aids used to be the only option for people experiencing hearing loss.

Today’s technology allows people experiencing hearing loss a wide range of smaller, less visible hearing aids. There are many current studies that cite appearance of hearing aids as a major reason to not use them, regardless of their effectiveness or benefits. In a majority of hearing loss patients, even the smallest available hearing aids can provide relief from the symptoms of hearing loss.

Apart from their bulky appearance, traditional hearing aids are also susceptible to ambient noise interference. Even something as slight as a breeze can interfere with the effectiveness of traditional hearing aids. Modern, smaller hearing aids fit partially to completely in the ear canal. This makes them less prone to ambient noise and wind interference.

Those who have been diagnosed with any degree of hearing loss have hundreds of options to research when deciding on a hearing aid. Unfortunately, a large number of those options can only advertise themselves as listening devices. They are cheap, small and less easily seen by others; however, they do not comply with FDA standards to qualify as a hearing aid. There are specific rules hearing aids must adhere to in order to be an actual hearing aid. Choosing a hearing aid that is the cheapest and hardest to see is not always the best or most beneficial option.

Hearing aids do not have to be the traditional model which everyone can see behind the ear. The first step to choosing a hearing aid is to visit a hearing professional and select a hearing aid that will most benefit the level of hearing loss diagnosed. This is a decision that can be made painlessly and a choice that will only be noticed by the person with hearing loss who can now hear more clearly.
