Only About 20% Of People Who Need Hearing Aids Get Them
According to Better Hearing Institute only about 20% of the 36 million people who need hearing aids wear them. There is a large number of people who could greatly benefit from the simple purchase of a hearing aid. The reasons generally cited for not purchasing hearing aids are expense, vanity and age.
There are many people who experience hearing loss but will not purchase a hearing aid because they believe it will cause them to look old or disabled. It is often a misconceived notion that only the elderly lose their hearing and use hearing aids. This is not the case, as any prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause someone to lose their hearing. Often this hearing loss from sound exposure happens very early in adulthood. Hearing loss can also be medically caused, due to viral infection or nerve damage, and can happen at any age. Â
Another excuse often given is the notion hearing aids do not work efficiently in noisy situations. While this can be true of older bulkier models, the modern hearing aid can be custom programmed for an exact degree of hearing loss. The ability to custom program to a specific hearing test can greatly expand the effectiveness of hearing aids.
While vanity and age are often the first excuses given by someone to avoid hearing aids, another main reason people avoid purchasing hearing aids is the cost. Most traditional hearing aids are expensive to purchase, expensive to maintain and expensive to replace. In the last few years there has been a significant increase in the availability of less expensive, over the counter, hearing aids that can reduce the initial cost of hearing aids. Â
Fortunately, there is a large selection of small digital hearing aids that can be purchased to assist the hearing impaired, without being noticeable to others. These are intended to be worn inside the ear canal with little to no visibility to others. Custom programmable hearing aids are intended to effectively allow clear sound to enter the ear canal without being distorted by noisy surroundings. With correct training in maintenance and use, hearing aids can last a very long time without any additional cost for replacement.
