Hearing Loss And Your Confidence

Confidence is key to working relationships, both personal and business relationships.  When some patients begin to experience hearing loss, they are often not sure of what is happening to them.  Other patients know they are experiencing a problem with their hearing but are in denial of the situation.  This denial can last for days, weeks, months or even years before the patient seeks assistance from a hearing professional.  This delay in diagnosis and treatment can cause hearing loss to worsen significantly and can affect the patient’s confidence and personal relationships.

Often, with hearing loss cases, the loss of the ability to hear people speaking clearly happens first.  Patients in denial of the hearing loss will often take a guess, assume or simply agree with the person speaking, even though they did not clearly hear them.  With spouses and long-term coworkers, patients will guess or assume what is being said out of habit.  Patients will often simply agree with others they are on short acquaintance with simply out of the need to hide their condition, and with the hope they will not encounter the person frequently.

This type of avoidance behavior can only go on for so long without the patient wondering what others are thinking of them.  Continuing the avoidance behavior can also lead to poor self-esteem when the patient begins to understand they are, in essence, lying to everyone they are speaking with.  This declining self-esteem can lead to a serious lack of confidence.  Patients with hearing loss may begin to avoid conversations with others entirely, not being confident they can carry on a conversation without incorrectly answering questions asked by the other person.

If this describes you, the solution is very simple.  See a Hearing Professional and get your hearing tested and if you have a hearing loss, get it corrected.  You won’t believe how a tiny little hearing aid that no one can see could bring back your confidence and change your life.
